Reading List UPDATED 01/11/2013

The Ten Grandmothers by Alice Marriott

This book is named after ten sacred medicine bundles, referred to as The Ten Grandmothers.

A book of stories.

I have only read one chapter of this book. My mother-in-law got it from the public library (She is one of the few people I know that still uses the library. Everyone seems to do everything online these days. I think a Kindle would offend her! LOL) and was not able to read enough before it was returned.

Needless to say, the book is far superior and more detailed than the movie! The movie is definitely worth watching, though. I cannot praise this novel enough. Jack Crabb is a white child raised by the Cheyenne.  He spends the rest of his life being torn between the two people he is, both Cheyenne and a white man.

The Kiowas in this book are NOT good guys. In fact, Larry McMurtry gets their personalities and reputation SPOT ON.

Custer is back on the Reading List. It disappeared for a second, but I wrangled it back in!

I am adding this book because of the great way the author uses Eastern Orthodox Priests in the book.  It is plausible if the situation were real. They are represented as very pastoral, merciful, brave, and selfless.

And finally, a movie:
Daughter of Dawn

A silent movie filmed in 1920 with an all Native American cast (Kiowa and Comanche .  My husband's great great grandfather, Jack Sankatoda (shown below), is the antagonist in this movie.

I hope this reading list is helpful and I hope if you read any of these great books that you will enjoy them as much as I have.

    1. Ugh, I have no idea how Custer got lost, but here it is, back on the list like it should be. In fact, I just ordered a cheap used copy from Amazon a few moments ago.

  4. Brandi, I hadn't had a chance to notice that Custer was gone from the list. Another person in Austin really did recall the copy I had checked out. Amazing!

    1. My Amazon order was cancelled because even though I clicked on Custer, another book showed up on my cart. Weird.

  5. Brandi, I heard the President of Green Peace talking about the depth and importance of Native American spirituality on TV. Then he asked Bill Moyers if he knew where the name of their ship, Rainbow Warrior, came from. He didn't and the President of GP said that there was a Native American prophecy that just before the world is completely destroyed a people called Rainbow Warriors would defend it.
